PDE 3145: Engaging the Online and Blended Learner
(Tier I - Online & Blended Certification Program)

Course Description

This course is designed for educators who are interested in learning new ways to engage learners in an online and blended environment. Participants will become familiar with iNACOL (International Association for K-12 Online Learning) teaching standards and how to apply them into their curriculum and delivery methods. Educators are challenged to implement blended/online procedures in their classrooms by providing them with technology based education platforms.  Teachers will become familiar with the technological skills to provide online feedback and student interaction in a blended and online classroom.

Objectives:

At the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and explore iNACOL teaching standards.
  • Explore best practices for engaging students online.
  • Analyze which blended or online model could be used in your classroom.
  • Develop an online program for their educational goals.

Online Session:

There will be one 1 hour mandatory Online Session (synchronous) session. The announcement and link to attend will be posted within your class. The Online Session will meet the following objectives:

  • Summarize course topics and expectations
  • Discuss blended and online learning trends.
  • Analyze how online and blended learning is used to facilitate learning.

Course Topics:

There are five learning modules in this courses, along with an opening orientation, and end-of-course check list. This course is a one credit PDE and will take a minimum of 15 hours to complete. Estimated time frames are provided below. Plan your time wisely over the three week duration of the course. 

Module 0 –Course Overview
Time: Approximately .25 hours

 By the end of this module, participants will:

  •  Understand the major projects and course path.

Module 1 –Building a Quality Online and Blended Program
Time: Approximately 2.5 hours

 By the end of this module, participants will:

  •  Explore how technology engages the learner.
  • Review the iNACOL National Standards for Quality Content, Teaching and Programs.
  • Analyze the steps for building a high-quality online and blended program.
  • Reflect upon your journey into online and blended learning.  

Module 2 – Communication
Time: Approximately 2.25 hours

By the end of this module, participants will:

  • Identify effective skills for communicating with students in an online and blended environment.
  • List ways in which to engage and organize your online or blended classroom to maximize interaction.
  • Understand how feedback can enhance and increase student performance.

Module 3 – Digital Tools of the Trade
Time: Approximately 2.5 hours

By the end of this module, participants will:

  • Identify how to effectively utilize digital tools in the classroom.
  • List ways in which you can integrate digital tools into your online or blended educational setting.
  • Understand the proper use for digital tools and student learning.

Module 4 – Quality Online Curriculum
Time: Approximately 3 hours

  • Identify the tools to evaluate quality content.
  • Analyze how an educator's role changes with various forms of content.
  • Understand the benefits of integrating online content into the educational experience.

Module 5 – Designing an Online or Blended Program
Time: Approximately 3.5 hours

  • Explore rubrics for online programs.
  • Review the iNACOL National Standards for Quality Online Programs.
  • Analyze the steps to develop a quality program for your students.
